Akinoomoshin Inc. is a grassroots not-for-profit organization working to center anishinaabe kendaaswin in the daily lives of anishinaabek. Our goal is to transform education for anishinaabek learners by offering anishinaabemowin (language) and anishinaabe izhichigewin (the way anishinaabe do things) centred learning through our teaching lodge, akinoomoshin wiigwam.
Akinoomoshin Inc. began to meet and organize in 2016, with kitchen table visits and discussions on the challenges of mainstream systems for our children and youth. We incorporated in 2017.
We were able to access funding to support akinoomoshin wiigwam operations for one year in 2018-2019. We were able to offer daily language immersion and culturally rich earth learning activities for children and their families. We were also able to support two language apprentices who supported the anishinaabemjig who led the daily learning.
In 2021, Akinoomoshin Inc. was granted permission by Atikmeksheng Anishnawbek Gimaa and Council to use an area of land near the community Sacred Grounds to develop our teaching lodge site, akinoomoshin wiigwam. Our trail and site development is still underway.
